When the king issued an edict that anyone who didn’t bow to him would be thrown into the lion’s den, the Bible tells us that Daniel did what he
always did… he prayed to his God. One of the things we learn about Daniel is that throughout his life, amid a foreign country and an ever-changing culture, he stayed consistent in his devotion, commitment, and obedience to God. Consistency is one of the most endearing features of Daniel’s life.
These words in 1 Corinthians are speaking about consistency. Paul is writing to this church about death, dying, their failing bodies, and how things are changing around them. And then he says, “But you must stay immovable.” In other words, stay consistent. Don’t change just because everything or everyone around you is changing. Stay true to God.
Consistency for the believer is like an anchor that will keep us from drifting. I’ve seen people fall away or stop seeking God or stop going to church because the church failed them. In reality, it wasn’t the church that failed them, it was the people or the leaders in that church. Here’s a good reminder… God never changes. Jesus never changes. Scripture never changes. And many spiritual giants have never changed. So, we mustn’t either.
Culture is always changing. Government is always changing. Leaders come and go (even in the church). Despite all the changes, though, we must remain steadfast, immovable. We must remain consistent in our prayer time, our Bible study, our morals, our values, our relationship with Jesus, our faith, our trust in God, our worship. God pours down His favor on those who remain consistent. And remember, “nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” If you’ve been inconsistent, make a vow to the Lord that you will get back on track and from this point forward, you will not let anything move you. Hope this encourages you today.
