I remember my leader Ron Baker who led a group of students on a short missionary trip to Guatemala for the summer. He was tall at about 6’4”, bright blue eyes (I called him blue eyes), but also tenderhearted. He often asked people, “Do you want to see my pride and joy?” And then we they would stand there waiting to see a picture of his beloved children. Instead, he opened his wallet to a picture of literal pride and joy – the detergent. Did I say, he was a jokester as well? I laugh when I remember him.
The Apostle Paul didn’t hold anything back when he told the church at Thessalonica that they were his pride and joy. In other words, they had a special place in his heart. Why? Because they were living for Christ. Paul’s investment in them was reaping incredible rewards. They were being transformed by the gospel, fulfilling the Great Commission, and their light for the Kingdom of God was shining bright. Any leader would be so proud.
I couldn’t get past these words this morning as I thought about our Tribe. I can so relate to the Apostle Paul. Thinking of you, especially those who are actively involved in our Tribe, brought tears to my eyes. I mentioned some of you by name. It is always my goal to not just bring information to you through Bible study, but to help you to apply it. Application of God’s Word is where true transformation comes from. And when I see and hear what God is doing in your life and how you are being transformed by the study and application of the Word, my heart fills with joy.
I have pictured us all together one day. I GET to meet many of you. Oh, how this warms my heart. Sometimes it’s hard being separated by miles, distance, and even oceans. But one day, our Tribe will be together, and Jesus will be there with us. What a day of celebration. I love each of you and it is a joy to bring God’s Word to you every day and to see you grow and abound in your relationship with Jesus. Thank you for making my life so full. You are truly my pride and joy.
Did you know that we will be rewarded for those we have invested in? Those who have been transformed by the grace of Jesus because we helped them along? Paul said that that this church was his reward and crown. Let these words sink in today. And let’s keep this Tribe growing and thriving. Invite people to join us… they will love what they find. I love each of you.
