Like today, there were many people in Paul’s day teaching God’s Word. And also, like today, there were many people mishandling and misinterpreting the Word of God. In the first century, these false teachers traveled from city to city. In today’s world, they sit in their car and turn their phone on and their messages are often broadcast all over the world. We call them influencers. Many pastors and Bible teachers fit into this category as well. They are young, passionate, and captivating. They appear to know Scripture and what they say seems accurate. They have a way of drawing people in. Here’s the thing… there are many influencers that handle the Word of God accurately but MANY that do not. Paul wanted to make sure Timothy understood this as he was grooming him in church leadership.
I can’t emphasize how important this message is… that we correctly explain (the word explain in some translations is translated “handle”) the Word of God. And it’s vital we really listen to what influencers and popular pastors and speakers are saying. Just because their message warms your heart or you can relate or you love their enthusiasm does not mean they are handling the Word of God correctly.
There are two ways the Bible is and has been interpreted. In theological terms, these words are called exegesis and eisegesis. Let me explain. These are two conflicting approaches to Bible study. One is correct and the other is not. The word exegesis means “to lead out.” This interpretation helps people draw a conclusion by following the text. The word eisegesis means “to lead into.” The one who interprets Scripture this way injects their own ideas into the text, making it mean whatever they want. Of course, the correct interpretation is exegesis.
Exegesis is concerned with discovering what the text is saying, paying attention to the words and the context. Eisegesis is only concerned with making a point… a point that captures a heart. Exegesis begins with the Word of God as the foundation… letting God’s Word take presentence over our ideas and opinions. Eisegesis begins with opinions and ideas and then makes God’s Word fit into that. Unfortunately, eisegesis is much more common today. Interpreting Scripture this way leads people away from truth and into the hands of deception. So, Paul warned Timothy… “You must be very careful to handle Scripture correctly.” If you do, you will not be ashamed and you will receive God’s approval.
This message is for all of us…. In the way we lead others by truth and also in the people we listen to. Make sure you listen to pastors, teachers, and even influencers who approach Scripture exegetically. Make sure you START with the Word of God and build from there. Just some encouragement today.
