These words come from one of the most popular chapters in the Bible: Hebrews 11. We often refer to this chapter as the Hall of Faith Museum. This is a museum that we need to frequent all the time… AND it’s free. What makes this chapter so valuable is not just the words about faith, but that it’s filled with biblical examples. People who walked by faith.
First, we learn that faith pleases God. It doesn’t say that going to church, serving in the church, good works, or using our gifts please God. It says that FAITH pleases God. And since this chapter lists many whose faith made headlines in the heavens, it’s worth a moment to look deeper into the Bible to gain examples by asking ourselves two questions: what does faith do and what does it look like?
What does faith do? Faith gains respect from people and leaders (Daniel); Faith inspires others (Paul); Faith keeps our hope alive (disciples); Faith strengthens our resolve (David); Faith opens our eyes to spiritual truths (many of those Jesus healed); Faith leads us to Jesus (woman who touched Jesus’ robe); Faith brings greater intimacy with Jesus (Mary Magdalene); Faith leads us to victory (Jehoshaphat).
What does faith look like? Faith is obedient even when we’re alone or it doesn’t make sense (Noah); Faith will never take one step without God going before you (Moses); Faith leads even when it seems impossible (Joshua); Faith keeps going even when there is no harvest (Isaiah); Faith stands strong when pressures mount (Stephen); Faith stays consistent no matter what (Daniel); Faith walks with God every day (Enoch).
When you examine faith in the light of biblical giants, it seems to take on a whole new life, right? You and I can please God – the Bible tells us that. When God is pleased, He pours down His favor on us. I don’t about you, but I want God to be pleased with me. So I will ask Him to help me be strong in faith. Will you do the same?
