What makes you delighted? Happy? Content? What puts a smile on your face? Brings great joy to your heart? I can think of a few things... having our kids with us at the same place? Getting together with family, immediate and extended. Fellowshipping with my sisters in Christ. Praying with people. Going to church. Teaching God's Word. Sharing daily devotionals here in this group. Hearing the amazing things God is doing in other's lives. These things bring me great delight.
In this verse, there are two words that describe how we are to respond to the Word of God: DELIGHT in and MEDITATE on. The Hebrew word for "delight" means PLEASURE. Think of it this way... when you open God's Word, you are literally hearing God speak. Can you think of anything more delightful than that? In fact, this should cause us more delight than ANYTHING else. I love to hear my loved ones share what's on their heart and I love to talk to my fellow comrades in the faith - it's always such a joy to hear them talk about the Lord. But God's voice? God's Word? Hearing what God has to say should pierce my heart and burn my ears.
In addition to delighting in God's Word, we are also to meditate on it. That means to ponder, reflect, engage in thought. Each of us should begin the day with God's Word. I love using a study Bible. Because as I read a passage and I wonder... What does that mean?... I have often found the answer to something by reading the footnotes at the bottom or looking up corresponding verses that you find in a study Bible. Throughout the day, we should make it a point to think about what we read from God's Word, asking ourselves questions... what does this mean for my life? How can I apply it? This is meditating on it.
Psalm 1 tells us that when we do this, we will "be like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do" (Psalm 1:3). Now, that's something we should want. Hope this encourages you today.
